Coming Full Circle

Monday, August 31, 2015

According to my health ap on my iPhone6, this morning,  I walked 8,143 steps or about 3.2 miles. I will do another mile or 2 miles later in the afternooon when the day temperature isn't 112 and the sun isn't as hot. I am really looking forward to the fall season. My goal is to walk at least 10,000 steps every day. Some days I accomplish it and some days I fall short.  But I try to walk every day. I have been walking every day for about 10 years. I don't do the10 k's or the 1/2 marathons that I used to do in the late 1970's and 1980's. My grandson looks at me and can't believe that I used to run that far. I showed him  the t-shirt where I broke 50 minutes for a 10K. But then I take out my other  event t-shirts and show him the tags on the shirts and he becomes a believer.  "Grandson, I was't always this age?"

If you don't have a dog, I would recommend getting a small dog. I have a 10 year old 1/2 Shitsu and 1/2 Yorkie that is one true love. I tell people that she is the one that keeps me walking. Every morning she starts barking and wants to go do her thing. I know that I have to take her out or she is not going to leave me alone. She has a special place where she does her thing. I can thank her for keeping me walking and healthy. Dogs are also great company. We recently adopted another dog that might be a big Chihuahua. Great dog too,  now I have 2 dogs that bark at me in the morning. Time to go.

Do you think we come full circle when we appraoch our 60's and 70's? I remember this quote and I am not sure who said it.  The quote goes like this, "Youth is for learning; middle age is for doing; old age is for enjoying." How would you interpret this? Have I come full circle. Can I say that I am at an age, some people might say old age,  where I am given a rare opportunity to learn new things and to really, really enjoy this age that  I am transitioning into. Is this the age where I can do those things, to learn those things  that I wasn't able to do when I was younger. Am I, have we entered, will enter a second childhood. Let me give you  an example; I used to love photography when I was young. I was 12 years old and I was a member of the Douglas Camera Club. Remember that group? Everyone was white, old and retired and they accepted me at the meeting. I must have looked funny sitting there in the middle of all those old people. The club had a big, expensive photo enlarger and they would let me use it during their monthly meetings. They would give tips on how to take better pictures. I used to love photography but my mother didn't have the money for an enlarger or any fancy equipment. So I would use our bathroom for a dark room. I would plug up all the holes  in the walls, put my red light bulb and develop my film and do contact printing. This is when I was 12 years old. I never lost my love for photography. I recently decided to pursue that love and bought me a new Nikon D5300. Wow, what a camera! I just might post some of my pictures on this site. Now the big questions is what other activities would I like to learn that I was not able to learn when I was young, maybe I would like to learn to play the piano. My 12 year old granddaughter can give me lessons and I can learn to play something simple like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" or maybe,  "Alla En El Rancho
Grande."

Stay healthy my friends!
